A Fighter's Future
With the collapse of the Soviet Union, many people have
questioned the United States' need for a fighter as advanced and
expensive as the F-22. To determine the depth of this need, the
Air Force commissioned the System Threat Assessment Report. This
study concluded that a threat to the U.S. does exist both from
the continued production of fighters in Russia and from other
countries' use of former Soviet planes.
The MIG and Sukhoi firms continue to improve designs and upgrade
existing equipment. The Sukhoi Su-35, a modification of the
Su-27, is capable of extremely high angles of attack. Russia has
also sold supersonic bombers to Iran and China. With a combat
radius of 1,370 miles, a bombload of 53,000 pounds and nuclear
capability, these Tupolev Tu-22M-3 Backfire bombers could upset
the balance of power in either the Middle East or Asia.
The F-22 will be shipped in the first years of the twenty-first
century. Already, the F-22 will carry fewer missiles and its
thrust-vectoring system will be less robust than originally
planned. These changes will add to the cost but may expand the
number of planes ordered. In any event, the Air Force hopes to
use the F-22 for the next fifty years, a period long enough to
make this multi-million dollar program worthwhile.
